County Government Day Reminder

Members,

County Government Day is quickly approaching! This year, the event will be held on February 19-20, 2024. We hope that you are all excited to attend and learn about current bills in the legislature affecting county government, as well as some wonderful training opportunities we have lined up.

If you haven't already registered for the event, there is still time to do so and you can do that
here. TCSA has secured a limited number of overflow rooms at a hotel nearby the Nashville DoubleTree by Hilton. If you still need a hotel room reservation for the event, please contact TCSA at [email protected] or (615) 532-3767 to be placed on the wait list. Rooms are being offered to those on the waiting list in the order they were received. This way we can determine if we need to secure more rooms if they are available.
Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you there!

County Commission Recognized for Excellence in County Government

The Robertson County Commission has earned the first annual OpenMeeting Technologies Board Award.

This award was created to recognize excellence in local government meetings by both individuals and whole boards for their commitment to going above and beyond while running their meetings.

“On behalf of Robertson County, we are honored to be chosen for this award. The past couple of years have been trying in the aspect of county meetings. We had to get creative with conducting meetings for everyone involved. OpenMeeting made it simple to conduct orderly meetings with numerous attendees. It is a smooth process from beginning to end. We try to have efficient and timely meetings, and with OpenMeeting, that is accomplished every time.” said County Clerk Angie H. Groves.

County Promotes Productivity for Incarcerated in Jail

Across the U.S., county jails are often seen as short-term holding facilities for individuals serving sentences or awaiting trial. However, in Tennessee, some individuals can be incarcerated for up to 11 months and 29 days, or for “11 29s.” Over the last year, Hamilton County, Tenn. leaders have reimagined this population’s time in jail with a re-entry program that promotes productivity, increases higher education attainment and reduces recidivism.

Amid the pandemic-driven closure of a private, for-profit prison and its subsequent $20 million renovation to transition the 500 individuals from the downtown jail to a larger facility, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Project Manager Scott Michiels saw an opportunity to enhance the jail’s re-entry program. Increasing vocational technical (vo-tech) education access drove the transformation. Vo-tech was a new addition to the existing “soft skills” program and is relatively rare in county jails.
