TCHOA 2024 Election Update

Elections & Retirements
Key deadlines have passed on the road to the August 1, 2024, County General Election for those whose names will appear on the final ballot. Write-in candidates still have until May 29 to submit their applications seeking certification ahead of the June 12 deadline to qualify locally. The state certification board will meet at least once more to consider applications for write-in candidates.

Eight county highway officials are retiring at the end of their current terms. They represent some 144 years of service as the highway CAOs for their respective counties. Most have even more service within their department, having worked there for years prior to their initial election.

Help me congratulate our TCHOA retirees and thank them for their service to their communities and the association throughout their tenure. Dates in parentheses denote their first election.
  • Cheatham County, Robert Hester (2016)
  • Giles County, Barry Hyatt (2004)
  • Hamblen County, Barry Poole (1996)
  • Jefferson County, Charles Tipton (2000)
  • Macon County, Audie Cook (2008)
  • Maury County, Van Boshers (1996)
  • Overton County, James Norrod (2012)
  • Rhea County, Glen Varner (2016)
This year's elections were decided during the March primary election. Multiple candidates are vying for the CAO position in Lewis and Overton counties, which both had primaries. In counties where neither party called a primary, all but one of the eight counties have only one candidate on the ballot. Roane County faces a challenge in August.

The incumbents in Bedford, Henderson, Montgomery, Polk, Rutherford, Smith, and Trousdale counties are unopposed, as are those in Campbell, Claiborne, Henry, Humphreys, Moore, and Union counties.

In six counties where there are announced retirements – Cheatham, Hamblen, Jefferson, Macon, Maury, and Giles – there is a single candidate on the ballot. In two others, Carter and Marion where the incumbent was appointed to finish an expired term, the appointee is the lone name on the ballot.

For a complete list of certified candidates whose names will appear on the ballot, please see the attached report. Candidates from this point on will be write-ins.
